Member States of the European Union have just authorized the commercialization of mealworms, also known as Tenebrio Molitor, on the European market!
This is fantastic news for the entire edible insect industry and opens the door to even more exciting developments in the future!
Following the positive opinion of EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) in mid-January 2021, mealworms can now officially be consumed in the form of whole dried insects or powder across the entire European market.
Why were we already selling mealworms at Jimini’s?
Edible insects were long surrounded by a legal gray area in Europe. This changed in 2018 when a new European regulation, known as the Novel Food Regulation, included edible insects under its scope.
Following this, applications to place each type of edible insect on the European market were submitted by various industry players. In the meantime, it was decided at the European level that all businesses already active on the market before 2016 could continue selling their products.
New authorizations for other types of insects are expected to follow soon!
